What Are You Packing?

I wonder if this is a “female” thing, but I am already thinking of what I’m going to pack on our trip to Mexico!! You know, how many bags to pack (although I am sure this will be decided for me), what kinds of clothes to bring, shoes to wear….etc. But when I seriously think of what I want to pack, I think of the things about myself that I do or don’t want to bring on this trip.

I “carry” a lot of things on a day-to-day basis—some good, some not so good. This is an opportune time to take inventory of that stuff (attitudes, thoughts, habits) that God doesn’t want me to carry—here at home for my sake, and certainly not on this trip when we will be serving others. What things does God want me to let go of and leave behind? (Maybe selfishness, pride, insecurity, to name a few). These are just an example of the things that if left in my “backpack” will weigh me down and wear me out quickly. They don’t give life to myself or to others. When we free ourselves from the weight of these things, it leaves more room so that we can take along more life-giving things like patience, cheerfulness, love, helpfulness; these things will be beneficial to me and a blessing to others.

When we fill ourselves with attributes of the Lord, and empty ourselves of the stuff that isn’t from Him, we are living as He intends—unburdened and unyoked to things that will ultimately do us damage in the long run. So, let’s begin taking inventory of what we will “pack” on this trip; let’s take this opportunity to ask the Lord—or even someone who loves us—what things would He want us to let go of and leave behind for the sake of ourselves and others? I am confident He will reveal these things if we sincerely ask. Then, pray that the Lord will fill up those places with qualities that will give life to us and to those we will serve—and ultimately leave us feeling more abundant and free.

And just as I want to leave room in my real suitcase for those fun souvenirs we plan to bring home, let’s leave some room in our spiritual backpack for the Lord to fill with some pretty amazing treasures!!

Looking forward to packing light,

Carissa

Special Juarez-i-licious Team Meeting This FRIDAY!!!

Hey Gang,

We wanted to let you in on an awesome opportunity THIS FRIDAY!

Peter Henderson is the youth pastor from Littleton, Colorado who will be leading our trip to Mexico and he is in Santa Cruz for a limited time! He will be here Thursday and Friday to experience some of the various things that we do here at The Coastlands such as our Internship Program, Missions, ICU’s, and to meet with US!

Because of his short visit, and because we understand many of you are in VBS Assembly Team practices, we thought that we would have a very short team meeting Friday night from 8:30-9pm somewhere on campus =) (We’ll put a sign on the office entrance door).

This is an opportunity for both the parents and the team to hear from Peter’s heart about this trip and what he believes the Lord has for all of us to receive. And it of course it would be great for everyone to meet him face to face.

While we appreciate that this is short notice and that your calendars are full, we encourage everyone to attend. Either way, kindly send us a “yes” or “no” reply.

Hope to see you on Friday!

-Josh & Rachael

Flower Frenzy & This Weekend’s Team Meeting

Hey everyone,

Here’s snipet of our flower frenzy. We raised $1,400!!!! Give yourself a hug (if your arms are long enough). Just a reminder, THIS Saturday we have our Team Meeting at 12:00 pm. Bring a lunch!!! Although it is Memorial Day Weekend, this meeting has been on the schedule, so if you WILL NOT be coming, please let Josh, Carissa, or myself (Rachae) know ASAP. Remember, this meeting IS required.

Stay tuned to some more pertinent info coming soon!

Now is the Time to Worship!

Hey, thanks to Mark Manchester for delivering the word on Saturday, and making us all go, “Hmmm…” As Mark looked at what the Bible has to say about worship and praise (and how they are different), we all came away from our training time much encouraged–and with newfound understanding of God’s kingdom principles. In other words, we got schooled!

Let’s all remember the main point: Worship isn’t so much about what we do on the weekends when we’re at church…as it is about how we live our lives all week long. When we put our needs aside, put those of others first–and give of ourselves for their sake–we experience first-hand what it is to worship (serve) God.

Go team! We’re gonna worship all trip long…and then some. And we don’t even have to have good voices. ;-)

-Josh (again)

P.S., Got something on your heart from our fundraiser? Training Meeting? Or??? Contact Rachael to post a blog.

Flower Power!

Hi Team,

Just wanted to say GREAT JOB with flower sales and flower arranging! What a blast we had as we assembled 70+ Mother’s Day arrangements on Saturday afternoon. Note to self for next time: Schedule a full two hours to empower the flower! We sold all but a few arrangements…and those few were “incomplete” ones that we made with the remaining flowers. I’ll let you know how much we raised soon. Check back in to the blog later this week for photos from our fragrant, fantastic and at times frenzied flower-filled fun time .

Training Meeting THIS Saturday!

Happy Wednesday!

I’m just pasting Josh’s email to everyone (from yesterday) below…please read the details so that we are all on the same page. If you are not going to be at Saturday’s meeting, please let Josh and I know ASAP.

Mail your letters!!!

—Rach

Hi Everyone!

Please take a few minutes to read through the following important Littleton, Colorado & Juarez, Mexico Mission Team public service announcement… YES, it’s a lot of info…but that just means we’ve got a LOT of good stuff happening related to our mission trip!

First, I want to make a couple of clarifications* to Rachael’s email re the flower sale. (Thanks Rach for hammering this out… I apologize that I didn’t communicate all of the details to you beforehand! =)

Mom’s Day Fundraiser: Flower Sales. Here’s the 411 on that:

  • ENVELOPES: You all should have envelopes to sell flower arrangements. If you don’t, it means that I didn’t see you this weekend, or that you left your envelope here.
  • *SALES: You can sell arrangements to whomever you desire to sell them: people at church, teachers, neighbors, etc. This weekend, we will have the arrangements available for sale/pickup in the Foyer. Anything you personally sell will go towards your $700 personal fundraiser-support goal; anything that is sold generally (i.e., at the table this weekend) will be distributed amongst the team. So, it’s to your advantage to personally sell! Put the money in your envelope, write down the name and payment info, and return to me at the end of this coming weekend. This is the SAME procedure as with the car wash BUT WITHOUT the paper “tickets” you gave people who paid to have their cars washed.
  • *COST: The cost per arrangement is $20 and includes some VERY nice flowers (from Susi’s) in a quart mason jar with decorative ribbon. This is a good deal anytime, and ridiculously affordable the weekend of Mother’s Day. Don’t be shy to tell people, “They’re $20…but you can give more if you like; it’s for a good cause!” Don’t forget to mention “Susi’s.” Many people know her flowers are GREAT.
  • ARRANGEMENT: We will be arranging the flowers as a team the last part of our training meeting THIS SATURDAY, MAY 10th. Guys, let’s out-arrange the girls! I know you have it in you.
  • PICK UP: Again, pickup will be in the Foyer during ALL 3 SERVICES this coming Sat/Sun. If you sell arrangements to people outside our church, they’ll either have to pick them up here OR you’ll need to deliver them. Please be sure to figure that out before you seal the deal with such folk.

Support Letters: Super-Size Important Info!

Almost all of you have postage stamps AND your finalized letters and printed on blue letterhead paper. That’s great! (If you do not, and you have already returned to me your second/final version of your letter, your letters will be ready today, Tuesday). Please note/follow these important guidelines for mailing your letter:

  • MAILING: Please take a few moments to re-read the mailing instruction sheet included in your original packets. (Parents, thank you for helping your youth with this, as there are several details.) One detail is NOT included in those instructions:
    • Be sure to cross out the original support deadline on your support cards and write in the new one. Here’s an example: “Friday June 13th 20th.” It’s just that easy. But wait, there’s more!
  • HANDWRITTEN PERSONAL NOTES: Just a reminder to hand-write a personal note at the bottom of each of the 25 letters you are mailing. This makes your letter feel much more…well, personal—instead of feeling like a form letter. This is not optional. This can be time-consuming. Don’t write a novella… just a sweet note from your heart, such as:
    • Howdy, Bobby-Joe and Sally-Sue! Long time, no see. I miss the days of country music and mechanical bulls! (How’s your head and wrist doin’, Bobby?!=) I’m SO excited about this trip and can’t wait to send you another letter AFTER I get back to tell you all about my experience. Thank you SO much for considering my request. I’ll try to find a Mexican cowboy hat to bring back for you—no promises, though! Ha, ha;-) Love, Loretta.”
  • *LIST OF YOUR SUPPORTERS: Please email Rachael (princesspickles10@gmail.com) your list of supporters by this Friday, May 9th. “June” in the previous email was a typo.
  • PUTTIN’ ‘EM IN THE MAILBOX: Please do your absolute best to get these in the mail by the end of the day tomorrow (Wednesday). I know we’re all very busy. Keep in mind that we have already extended our timeline quite a bit, so we need to finish this process so your supporters have ample time to send you support.

TRAINING MEETING THIS SATURDAY, MAY 10TH | NOON-3PM | FIRESIDE ROOM

We’ll be eating together at noon, so please bring something to eat fo’ yo’self. I would be happy to eat anything you don’t, but don’t feel obligated to feed me.

Mark Manchester will be teaching us about Worship. I’m very excited about that and know you will enjoy him.

Here’s a checklist of things to bring to our meeting:

  1. Your lunch!
  2. Your Bible
  3. A notebook
  4. A pen or pencil
  5. Your flower sale envelope
  6. Any notes you still have from our first meeting
  7. Questions?
  8. Your excitement and eagerness to listen, learn, participate…and arrange flowers.

You will be getting a TEAM BINDER and a LIFE JOURNAL at this meeting. Yippeee!

That’s it (yes, a lot—I know!) for now. Call/email me if you have questions. We’re doing great and I’m VERY excited to be leading this team of such fine young people.

Brrrr… It’s Cold Out There!

I’ll keep this one short and to the point: It was stinkin’ cold today! Most of it anyway. I was thinking about this as I zipped up my hoodie to insulate myself against the cold, drizzly weather earlier this morning and afternoon.

Here’s all I want to say: Thank You, God, for AMAZING weather last Sunday for our car wash! A week ago today we were splishin’-and-a-splashin’, washing cars and raising somewhere in the neighborhood of $900. How cold and not-so-fun it would have been to wash cars today instead.

Again, thank You, Lord!

Flower Fun & Support

Hello fellow Undergrounders, and parents,
I just want to quickly give you some updates concerning the Mother’s Day Flower Fundraiser, as well as the next step for support letters.
Mother’s Day Flower’s
  • Much of what we are doing with this fundraiser is almost exactly the same as what we did for the car wash fundraiser. Meaning that you will each have envelopes with your name on them in the conference room tomorrow (Saturday) during the 5 O’clock service.
  • The envelopes will have an order sheet, so please take orders for the flowers and encourage people to pay for their order as well. The cost is $20 per flower arrangement but people can certainly give more if they like!
  • You guys ROCKED selling the car wash tickets…now you can ROCK flower orders on behalf of all the mom’s, grandma’s, aunt’s, “mother figures” out there!!
Support Letters
  • Most of you have already emailed me your REVISED support letters, so if you HAVE NOT emailed your revised letter to me, please do that to me today!
  • For those who have emailed revised letters to me, your letters will be ready and printed for you in the conference room for you to pick up during the 5 O’clock service as well.
  • Once you’ve picked up your letters, and other info, you can mail them out! Don’t forget to change the date on your support slip to June 20th. Be sure to include a personal note on your letters to your supporters (check out the mailing instructions). We want these letters to be in the mail by Monday or Tuesday.
  • As you begin to mail your letters, please make a list of who you are sending your letters out to and email it to either myself or Josh by Friday, May 9th.
Please feel free to contact me or Josh with any questions or points of clarifications. You guys are doing great!

Revised Letters

Rach again…

Since I’m here, just a friendly reminder to email me your REVISED letters by THIS FRIDAY.  Make the necessary edits on your letters and email them to me at: princesspickles10@gmail.com .  If I don’t receive the letters on Friday, then I’m going to assume that you want me to go over your letter with you when you buy me coffee at Starbucks:) I’m kididng…well kinda.  However, I do want to say GREAT JOB on your letters thus far.  I was blessed to read what you wanted to say to your supporters. Keep up the good work and continue to share your heart for the trip to people around you!

Epic Carwash!

Hey Undergrounders….(Rach here)

I just wanted say how AWESOME the carwash on Sunday was.  It was great to see everyone come together as a team (and parents too!) to give it all for the the carwash.  I don’t have an exact total (Josh?) on how much we raised, but I know that it’s a great start to our fundraising adventures that lay ahead!

Here’s just a few pictures of the afternoon. Ton’s of fun!  Stay posted for the future happenings!
